She has shown us her beauty.
And her mystery.

She has nourished us.
She has given us shelter.

She has been a mother. A teacher. A companion.

She has seen our successes.
And our failures.

She has shaped our ambition. Our imagination. Our memory.

She is beautiful.
And she is vulnerable.

She means the world to us.

As global kingpins like GM and British Petroleum align themselves with clean energy initiatives, a new breed of energy-savvy tech wizards in Palo Alto have launched an idea that may offer some key solutions to our appetite for electron-guzzling gadgetry.

YouPower Industries, Inc. recently kicked off their first phase of operations after quietly taking out leases on four industrial parks in Palo Alto, San Mateo and East Palo Alto. Their product has been a closely guarded secret since its inception last year, and with a number of patent applications filed in just the last several months the company has been under intense pressure to spill the java beans.

The "Canal House" is an historic two-story mill building renovation that will accommodate 16 one- and two-bedroom loft-style condominium residences. Magnificent oversized east- and west-facing windows will provide abundant natural light throughout the expansive floor-through layouts with unencumbered river and city views.

History: Centered on the lucrative textile industry, the backbone of Woonsocket was its six mill villages with their textile factories located along the Blackstone river. Many of the mills were owned by French and Belgian citizens, enticed to invest in Woonsocket by Governor Aram Pothier. Almost all the factory buildings were cotton or wool knitting and weaving mills that produced cotton prints, sheeting, flannel and satinets.

A canal lock system proved the most economical way to move goods between Providence and Worcester, and when it was eventually abandoned Allen Street replaced the third lock. The remnants of the old lock can still be seen today.

Should wind energy be damned because wind turbines kill birds or because wind farms don't make economic sense?

The threat posed by wind turbines to bird and bat populations is reason enough for some to shelve this source of renewable energy, but too often the data used to support this thesis--as happens with any cause that is near and dear to one's heart--is drawn from high exposure situations: wind farms poorly sited in migratory pathways, near nesting areas, and at mountain passes where bird traffic is highest.

Wind turbines do kill birds, and so do cars, buildings, and transmission lines; by the hundreds of millions.

But what of the economics? In fact, there is already a growing consensus--and enough accurate data to support it--that wind-generated electricity is simply too expensive. Denmark, it seems, that paragon of wind power, is apparently poised to make an abrupt about-face. (Disappointing, isn't it?)
